Are PPI’s dangerous?

PPIs function by reducing the amount of acid the stomach produces. Stomach acid is needed for digestion and protection from harmful bacteria. More and more studies are suggesting acid suppression from long term PPI use may be increasing the risk for other diseases or complications such as: cardiovascular disease and heart attack, C diff infection, bone fractures, chronic kidney disease,  poor absorption of vitamins and minerals, pneumonia, and dementia.

Many of the study authors have noted that more study is needed and that PPI patients who are at risk for or are experiencing any of the above issues should talk to their doctors about their concerns.
